The phenomenon by which an effect in a body depends not only on the present cause, but also on the previous state of the body. In magnetisation a flux density produced
by a given magnetic field intensity depends on the previous magnetisation history. A comparable effect occurs in the electrification of insulating materials. In cyclic changes hysteresis is the cause of energy loss.
