Why Active Harmonic Filtering?

Variable speed drives, UPS systems, EV chargers, BESS, solar inverters and other power electronic loads can introduce harmonic currents into an electrical installation. Excessive harmonics can contribute to transformer and cable heating, high neutral current, nuisance operation, capacitor problems, increased losses and voltage waveform distortion.

How an AHF Works

An Active Harmonic Filter continuously measures load current, identifies unwanted harmonic components and injects a compensating current. Depending on the selected technology, the same system may also support reactive-power compensation, power factor improvement or phase-load balancing.

Measure Before Selecting a Filter

CHK Power Quality recommends measuring the installation before selecting or sizing harmonic mitigation. The Miro PQ45 Class A Power Quality Analyser and Logger can be used to record voltage, current, THD, individual harmonics, interharmonics, power and operating behaviour.

Plant & non-linear loads

For a whole site assessment, begin at the main LV switchboard or Point of Common Coupling (PCC). If significant harmonics are identified, repeat measurements on individual feeders such as VSD, UPS, EV charging, BESS/PV, HVAC or production loads to identify the main contributors.

Measurement safety: Connection of power-quality measurement equipment must be undertaken by appropriately qualified personnel using suitable leads, current sensors, PPE and safe electrical work procedures.

Smart Harmonic Mitigation Selector

Enter your site information, electrical system, measured harmonic performance and installation conditions. You can also select Miro PQ45 or Citrus or other PQ data files. The selector provides an indicative assessment and identifies suitable harmonic mitigation solution paths for CHK engineering review.

Start Your Assessment

Tell us about the electrical system, installation environment and measured harmonic performance. The selector compares the requirement with suitable CHK solution families and identifies where engineering review is required.

Preferred assessment method

Use a Miro PQ45 to record the site over a representative operating period, then create a Bulk Export CSV from Citrus. This gives CHK a stronger basis for reviewing load variation, harmonic levels and the harmonic spectrum before confirming the product selection.

Upload Miro PQ45 or Citrus Bulk Export CSV

For the best assessment, export the Bulk CSV time series file from Miro PQ45 Citrus and upload it here. Where practical, select All Logged Parameters and include current channels, RMS values, THD, TIHD and harmonic magnitudes. CSV and TXT files can be scanned in your browser for common THDi and THDv fields. Excel and PDF files may be selected as supporting information for CHK engineering review.

Harmonic Mitigation Solutions

CHK Power Quality offers trusted third party products for harmonic mitigation, supported by our power quality measurement and analysis capability.

Using measurement data from the Miro PQ45 and Citrus, or suitable power quality data supplied by the customer, we can assess harmonic conditions and assist in selecting an appropriate solution for the application.

Supply and Installation

The assessment considers the electrical system, harmonic levels, load characteristics, installation environment, enclosure requirements, available space and future expansion.

CHK Power Quality can recommend and supply the appropriate harmonic mitigation product. We can also assist with installation, commissioning and verification following installation.

Manufacturer and product information is provided after the customer registers the enquiry and completes the preliminary assessment.
